Sao Nicolau Island
The island of Sao Nicolau has a little bit of each of the islands of the Cape Verde archipelago; a beautiful capital with colonial architecture, long and deserted beaches, villages stopped in time, dramatic cliff roads, and typical mountains of the area. Due to its strategic position in the archipelago, it was for years the intellectual center of Cape Verde, but around 1930 its schools and universities were closed. Today, with less than 1% of the tourism that Cape Verde receives, the island of Sao Nicolau becomes a quiet and pleasant place where one has the opportunity to know in first person the daily life of the population.

Sao Nicolau in data
History
Like most Windward islands, Sao Nicolau was discovered in 1461, but the first Guinean slaves did not arrive until the early 16th century. During the 17th century, the island of Sao Nicolau had a green interior with high quality wine production and a good number of donkeys and goats, as well as an abundance of timber. After numerous attacks by French, English and German pirates, in 1818, regrouping most of the population in Ribeira Brava, the fort was built to protect against future plundering. In the middle of the 19th century, the seminary was created and an adjacent school where the same studies were taught as in the schools of Portugal. For the first time, some lucky Cape Verdeans had the opportunity to receive a very good education. At the beginning, the collective consciousness was that Cape Verde was part of Portugal, but as time went by and jumped to a new generation, this idea started to be questioned. Juvenal Cabral, one of the seminary professors who fought for better rights in Cape Verde gave way to the new generation, in which his son Amilcar Cabral would become the leader of the future revolution for the independence of Cape Verde.
Biodiversity
A territory with beautiful desert beaches and a central semi-humid valley that runs almost the entire island.
On the island of Sao Nicolau we can find up to 46 endemic species of plants, 32 of which are located in the Monte Gordo natural park.
One of the most colorful and abundant is the Dracaena draco, locally known as dragoeiro, which with a height of about 10 meters can exceed 1000 years old.
In terms of birds, Monte Gordo is a good place to observe specimens such as the pterodroma feae, apus alexandri or buteo bannermani.
