Environment in Cape Verde, fight for the preservation of the archipelago

The preservation of the environment in Cape Verde is becoming a primary objective.

do you want to know its consequences?

It is a fact that the social and economic development of countries is damaging ecosystems and the preservation of nature. This factor is in addition, for example, to others such as tourism, which also has harmful effects on the territories, causing more pollution and even the extinction of some species. For this reason, it is a breath of fresh air that countries such as Cape Verde devote great efforts to the maintenance of natural resources. In this article we tell you about some of the environmental preservation projects in Cape Verde.

Cape Verde is a “green” country in the broadest sense of the term. In fact, for several years now it has been in the top ten of the world’s most ethical destinations, according to the NGO Ethical Traveler. Among other reasons, this organization has identified in this small African archipelago a strong commitment to biodiversity conservation and rural development as an economic engine. It also has several projects underway in the area of marine life protection.

Protection of loggerhead sea turtles: one of the pioneering preservation projects

Five species of sea turtles can be found in the Cape Verde archipelago. Of these, the only nesting species are loggerhead turtles(Caretta caretta). This is the second largest nesting population in the Atlantic Ocean, although it is currently considered an endangered species. This is due to threats such as poaching of these turtles and also to the action of tourism.

"One of the environmental preservation projects in Cape Verde is related precisely to this fact. In addition to laws and governmental action plans,

There are local NGOs dedicated to conserving the habitat of these marine animals, such as Project Biodiversity. If you are interested in these issues, it might be a good experience during your trip to learn how they work on Salt Island.”

But that’s not all, because this non-profit organization also has seabird protection projects, as well as ecosystem conservation. The work carried out by the NGO is fundamental to preserve the natural wealth of Cape Verde.

For now, still under control

The archipelago is still today a destination that has not been reached by the massive arrival of tourists. However, some islands are more crowded than others, as is the case of Sal, known for its extensive white sand beaches. It is also home to numerous species, such as the aforementioned loggerhead turtles and a multitude of seabirds.

All these living beings make up an ecosystem that is truly the great attraction of Cape Verde. Making sure that the impact of tourism is reduced to a minimum is everyone’s job. In addition to the environmental preservation projects in Cape Verde, each one of us must do our bit. Only then will it remain that idyllic destination to which you always want to return.
