CAPE VERDE ESSENCES

Leeward Islands

Leeward Islands is the trip that covers the south of the archipelago: Santiago, the most African island and Fogo, the volcanic island par excellence. You will explore the remains of the first colonial settlement in Cape Verde and you will be able to crown the summit of the imposing Fogo volcano. You will observe firsthand the force of nature of volcanic eruptions, walk through the Natural Park of Sierra Malagueta and visit the rural area of Rui Vaz, ending at the idyllic beaches of the seaside enclave of Tarrafal.

Day 3. Cha das Caldeiras – Sao Filipe
Day 4. Sao Filipe – Mosteiros – Sao Filipe – Praia – Rui Vaz
Day 5. Rui Vaz – Assomada – Tarrafal
Day 6. Tarrafal
Day 7. Tarrafal – Sierra Malagueta – Tarrafal
Day 8. Tarrafal – Praia – City of Origin

Day 1: City of origin – Praia
Departure by scheduled flight to Praia, on the island of Santiago to begin our trip to the Leeward Islands. Arrival at the airport, welcome and transfer to the hotel in Praia. Rest of the day at leisure to get to know and stroll around this modern city. With an air between African and Mediterranean, the city of Praia sits on a rock plateau that houses about 130,000 inhabitants. A city that grew rapidly and somewhat chaotically, a reflection of Cape Verdean miscegenation. We recommend visiting the handicraft market of Sukopira and the fruit market of the Plateau district. Overnight at the hotel. (-/-/-)

Day 2: Praia – Sao Filipe – Cha das Caldeiras
Breakfast at the hotel. In the morning transfer to the airport to take the flight to Fogo Island. We are talking about the imposing volcano, still active, which gives its name to the island. Despite this situation, this theoretically hostile land is home to the third largest capital of Cape Verde, Sao Filipe. Among the latest eruptions, the one in November 2014 stands out, when a violent eruption wiped off the map two small villages in the crater of Cha das Caldeiras; fortunately no casualties were to be regretted. The inhabitants of Fogo Island have always shown a more than positive attitude in surviving in this threatening land. Despite the inclemencies and the government’s recommendations to evacuate the villages, they have always chosen to stay and go on with their lives peacefully. Arrival Sao Filipe and transfer to Cha das Caldeiras, at the foot of the Fogo volcano at almost 2000 meters of altitude. Rest of the afternoon free to walk around and meet the local people of Cha. Dinner and accommodation with a local family in a guesthouse (B//D).

Day 3. Cha – Pico de Fogo – Cha – Sao Filipe
Breakfast early in the morning (5.30h). Day dedicated to the ascent to the summit of the volcano Pico Grande de Fogo of 2829 meters. We will start the excursion with approximately one hour by flat volcanic terrain to the foot of the peak where the most demanding part begins. The ascent will be made by volcanic tartar slopes looking for the most stable terrain to advance. After 4/5 hours from the beginning of the ascent, we will reach the summit, where we will enjoy a 360 degree panoramic view of the island of Fogo. Stop to drink, eat and enjoy the views. The descent will be made by the slope of Small Peak where we will contemplate the trace of the last eruption of 2014. Arrival at Cha where we will stop for a drink and rest our legs and then transfer to the hotel in Sao Filipe. Rest of the afternoon free to discover this small town, capital of the island. A very nice and well-structured capital full of Portuguese houses and streets with bougainvilleas. It has a small but busy market and an area with quality restaurants. Its cobblestone streets contrast with the black sand beaches on the horizon. Portuguese architecture is very present in the capital of the island of Fogo, either in the squares, but especially in the beautiful colonial houses with clay tiles and wooden balconies. Lodging (B/L//) *Trip to the Fogo Peak modifiable by excursions in the volcanic area.

Day 4. Sao Filipe – Mosteiros – Sao Filipe – Praia – Rui Vaz
Breakfast at the hotel. Free morning in Sao Filipe to relax on the black sand beach of Tortuga beach. Optionally we can tour the island of Fogo to visit the villages along its coast. We will leave Sao Filipe with private car and guide to visit the village of Cova Figueira, from here we will move to the north coast of the island, in the village of Mosteiros, where the Fogo coffee cooperative is located, another of the surprising economic resources in the Leeward Islands. Lunch included in a local restaurant.

We will follow the road back to the capital passing by the west coast and visiting the old salt pans, now converted into pools among the rocks. Return to Sao Filipe. In the afternoon transfer to the airport for flight back to Praia. Arrival and transfer to Rui Vaz, in the interior of the island of Santiago. Rui Vaz is a perfect sample of the rural life of the island and will also be a good opportunity to get in touch with the local people. We will stay at the comfortable Quinta da Montanha guesthouse where we recommend enjoying its terraces and views during the sunset. Lodging and dinner at the guesthouse (B/L/D/C).

Day 5. Rui Vaz – Assomada – Tarrafal
Breakfast at the guesthouse. Morning dedicated to the excursion to Antonia Peak, the highest point of the island. After a short transfer by car with our guide, the hike goes along the edge of the mountainside, enjoying at all times a privileged panoramic view over the whole island. Picnic lunch. In the afternoon transfer to Tarrafal, a small coastal village in the north of the island. On the way we will visit the inland village of Assomada and its important market and cross the natural park of Serra Malagueta. Arrival in Tarrafal and accommodation at the King Fisher Village Hotel, a small hotel located on a small cliff that has a private cove for its guests, as well as a diving school. Dinner a la carte (not included) and overnight at the hotel (B/L/-).

Day 6. Tarrafal
Breakfast at the hotel. Free day in Tarrafal to discover this beautiful fishing enclave. We recommend watching the arrival of the fishermen and the boats on the beach and then share it among the different families; a postcard of the Leeward Islands. Possibility to relax on the beach and/or do water sports such as snorkeling, diving or kayaking. Dinner a la carte (not included) and overnight at the hotel (B/-/-).

Day 7. Tarrafal – Sierra Malagueta – Tarrafal
Breakfast at the hotel. Free day in Tarrafal. Optional: Early in the morning meet the guide at the hotel and transfer to the Sierra Malagueta National Park to enjoy a gentle trekking. We will walk through the Gom Gom valley to appreciate the flora and the ravines that surround the valley; there we will see first hand the rural life of the small communities that live there. Picnic lunch. Return to the hotel in Tarrafal. Dinner a la carte (not included) and overnight at the hotel (B/L/-).

Day 8. Tarrafal – Praia – Home Town
Breakfast at the hotel. Free day in Praia until the agreed time for transfer back to Praia to take the flight back to the city of origin. End of the trip in the Leeward Islands and of our services (B/-/-).

Important information

How do we work?

In Oi Cape Verde we design completely customized trips to the African islands, managing all services (including internal flights and ferries), from your arrival to the archipelago until you take the return flight. We do not manage international flights, but don’t worry, we will explain below the easiest way to book them. In addition, with Oi Cabo Verde you will enjoy 24/7 support in all the islands to travel with total peace of mind.

Reservations

Once you have decided that you want to travel to Cape Verde we make it easy for you. Click on “I want to travel” or “Contact” and we will offer you different ways to design your trip. We can do it by phone or video call, so that we can meet each other face to face! During this consultation, you explain to us the type of trip you have in mind, the dates, days, accommodation category, type of experiences, etc. After this, we will look at the best travel proposal to design, how many islands to visit and advise you on international flights. A few days after the consultation you will receive your travel proposal and later you will be able to formalize it.

In advance

In order to ensure the best available services we recommend you to book your trip several months in advance, ideally between 3 and 6 months. At Oi Cabo Verde we do not manage “last minute trips” less than 30 days before departure. We tell you in much more detail in the following link:

Individual services

We only manage integral trips and all the services we include are part of a tailor-made itinerary designed according to your needs. We do this because in this way we have total control of everything that happens in Cape Verde. Also, by traveling with Oi Cabo Verde you will enjoy 24/7 support on all the islands.

Responsibility

We work with local operators always trying to promote family businesses that offer good working conditions and fair wages. Our tourism proposal is to have as positive an impact as possible, always respecting people as much as possible and trying not to interfere in the daily life of the local population.

International flights.

As we have already mentioned, Oi Cabo Verde does not manage international flights, but here we explain how they work.

The options for travel to Cape Verde from Spain are still somewhat limited. However, this fact preserves the archipelago as a sustainable tourist destination, somewhat exclusive and in many corners still emerging.

The best option to travel from the mainland is offered by TAP Portugal, which with a quick stopover in Lisbon, we can access the archipelago from different cities. From the Canary Islands, the company Binter offers direct flights to Sal. Between June and September, Vueling offers direct flights from Spain to the island of Sal. There are other options such as Royal Air Marroc, which although offering lower prices, we do not recommend it due to its continuous delays and cancellations.

At the price level, as you know it is impossible to predict the fares of the tickets, but we can show a tendency of them. In no case we would speak of low cost prices. We can travel from 325€ in months like March or October or up to over 900€ in special seasons like Christmas, New Year or some weeks of August.
Below, we present an approximate graph of the average price to travel to CV.

The stopovers in Lisbon have an approximate duration of 1h 50min. The peninsular flight has a duration of 1h 15/50min (BCN/MAD) and the long flight takes about 4 hours. The tickets include snack during the short flight, menu on the long flight, and normally luggage.

We recommend checking the tickets directly on the airline’s website, as other portals show unreal prices with surcharges added later. You can access through their website or by clicking on the airline logo shown below.
